What is a wisdom tooth extraction?
Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth. These are the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on both the top and bottom.
Most dentists believe it’s better to remove wisdom teeth at a younger age, before the roots and bone are fully formed, and when recovery is generally faster after surgery. This is why some young adults opt to have their wisdom teeth pulled even before the teeth cause problems.
According to the American Dental Association, wisdom teeth removal becomes most necessary if you experience uncomfortable changes in the area of those teeth. These changes may include pain, repeated infection of soft tissue behind the lower last tooth, and cysts.
How to prepare for a wisdom tooth extraction
Teens and young adults can prepare for wisdom tooth extraction by following these tips and guidelines:
Do not eat or drink after midnight before the extraction. This is for your safety and comfort during and immediately after the procedure.
Be honest about any over-the-counter and prescribed medications you’re taking. This is important medical information for your safety!
Do not smoke for 12 hours before the extraction. Better yet, just don’t smoke! It’s terrible for your teeth and overall health.
Get your room at home ready for your recovery. This is a biggie! You will be resting for a couple of days, so make the most of it. Charge your tablet, find the remote, gather your pillows, and prepare some soft ice packs.
Stock up on the right food to eat when you return home. We suggest ice cream, smoothies (without fruit seeds like strawberry or raspberry, as these can get stuck), mashed potatoes, and other soft foods.
Arrive at the office in comfortable clothing such as sweat pants and t-shirts. If you usually wear contacts, opt for glasses instead. If you have long hair, pull it back into a ponytail for the procedure.
Bring a driver because you can’t drive yourself home! If you’re under 18, you should be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
How we are different
There are many benefits to having wisdom teeth removal in Phoenix with your regular care team at 19th Avenue Dental Care. One of the main benefits is that we never “put people under” with general anesthesia. General anesthesia puts you at higher risk for a myriad of issues.
Instead, we use a localized anesthetic, along with nitrous gas to help you relax. Nitrous is sometimes referred to as “laughing gas” because people find the experience so pleasant! Taking nitrous oxide can cause feelings of euphoria, relaxation, and calmness. You will have a feeling of general numbness throughout the body and become a bit lightheaded. However, you will still be able to communicate with your dentist throughout the procedure.
Additionally, for our established patients, we can also prescribe Valium. This prescription can help calm you and take away the stress of the procedure, before, during, and immediately after.
