Wondering what tooth extraction is like? Here’s some quick answers so you can feel prepared for your dental work.
When Does a Tooth Require Extraction?
We have preformed tooth extraction in Phoenix for more than 30 years. Over the years, we’ve had to perform tooth extractions for patients with mouth trauma, tooth decay from neglecting oral hygiene, gum disease, and overcrowding.
Some patients undergoing chemotherapy or organ transplantation may have to have teeth pulled if they pose a risk of infection.
If you are experiencing any of these issues, you can talk with your dentist to see if tooth extraction is the best care route for you.
What is the Tooth Extraction Procedure?
The tooth extraction procedure can be a subject of worry for many patients, but rest assured, you won’t feel anything while we are performing the procedure.
We will apply a local anesthetic to your tooth or place you under general anesthetic while we perform the procedure. Your dentist will remove the gum tissue and bone from around the tooth and carefully extract it with forceps.
A blood clot will form in the empty socket and the dentist will place a gauze pad on the wound that you will have to bite down on for a few hours after the surgery.
You may also receive self-dissolving stitches in the wound.
What is an Emergency Tooth Extraction?
An emergency tooth extraction is required when it is absolutely imperative that a tooth be removed within a 24 to 48 hour period. These situations typically involve massive tooth breaks, severe pain, large cracks, and other scenarios that may put your oral health at risk. Emergency tooth removal is a last resort, and our team will do everything possible to preserve your natural teeth.
Healing From the Tooth Extraction Procedure
You will be able to go home when you wake up from the procedure. If you were placed under general anesthetic, you should have someone pick you up and drive you home, as you may be drowsy for a few hours after you wake.
For the first 24 hours after your tooth extraction, you should not rinse, spit, or drink from a straw.
This could break the blood clot and put you at risk for dry socket.
Eat soft foods, take any prescribed medications, and get lots of rest as your body heals from the extraction.
How Long Does An Emergency Tooth Extraction Take?
For one tooth, the entire emergency tooth extraction process can be completed in about 20-40 minutes. However, if you’re having multiple teeth extracted, expect to spend a little more time in our office. Each additional tooth will take another 3-15 minutes, depending on its location.
